Susumu Fujita was born in Yokohama Japan in 1978.
Since in his childhood, he knew that his passion was to create things. Growing up in the biggest video game generation, his toys were in his father's tool box and mother's stationary case. His parents stop buying him toys like ordinary child, because any toy doesn't last even few hours. He would dissembled them to discover how they work or turn them into something else. His parents learned that buying him tools and material is much less expensive and more productive by the time he was in 3rd grade. Among many things he made as youngster, he realizes that he mostly built tools and building models. He never struggled to decide his future profession.
He came to New York as an Architecture Student at the City College of New York. He worked at Cecil Pierce and Associate in SoHo since his freshman year, and learned office administrative and CAD drafting. During these years, he financially struggled, and worked as bartender in midtown after working as an associate architect. While he slept in sleeping bag at the studio in college after 2 jobs, his academic interest gradually declined. He left school as he completed 2nd year.
He decided work as carpenter apprentice at Yodomi craft to continue his architectural career since it required less academic qualification, and it also gave him financial stability. While working as the last apprentice of the traditional Japanese master carpenter Shigeru Kobayashi who was 72 at the time, he spent 5 short years learning art of Japanese joinery, cabinetry detailing, furniture making method and construction/fabrication(shop) drawing.
Among all of those, he learned combining design and craft hands on skill and knowledge. He then, discovered unlimited possibility of defining himself as creative professional.
In age of 28, he became the founder of studio D.O.T., in passion of "Creating anything we can, one at the time." D.O.T. stands for Dimension, Organization and Transformation, the three elements required in process of any creation. He seeks any opportunity allows him to dedicate his passion to create. As his life work of creation, he believes that his true eternal training has just started.
